Although it’s been awhile, I’ve been thinking a lot about this website over the past few weeks. Remembering where it began, reflecting on how it has evolved, and postulating about what lies in its future. What began as a somewhat objective study of illness narratives has transformed to introspectively explore my personal navigation of the genre.
This summer, for the next two months before medical school begins in August, I will be doing something else that I love: traveling. From India to Paris to Spain, I’m really excited to have the opportunity to see more of the world. I am determined to make the most of this exciting time.
My ever-growing summer reading list beckons, and my travel journal of blank pages is waiting to be filled. I hope to refrain from technology (insofar as is possible) and instead feel the pages of real books and write through my thoughts with a pen in hand.

THE FUTURE IS WRITTEN ON YOUR INSIDES.
If there is a piece of writing advice that is taken too fucking literally–aside from ‘write what you know’–it’s ‘make something exciting happen on the first page.’ You know what that means? That means I’ve read far too many books–and seen far too many movies, because apparently everyone gets their advice from the same place–over the last little while that start with something actually exploding.
This is a problem.
Now, look: I like explosions as much as the next guy. More, probably. And I get that you want to grab the reader’s attention. But having some random tart push a button and explode a mail box doesn’t get my attention. Because, without at least a little context, I don’t give a fuck. For all I know, that’s how you send mail in her world.*

It’s a great time of year. It’s chicken time:

These eggs are part of a life cycle unit that a friend of mine who is second grade teacher teaches this time of year. It is getting close to the end of the year, so it is harder to keep the kid’s attention as the weather get nicer. This unit however, is fascinating, and a highlight of the second grade school year.
So, this is one of my first photos of this year. The next step will be for these eggs to go into incubators. As you can tell, there will be a variety of chickens hatching this year. This is, in part, to show the kids the diversity that can exist among a species. The chickens that hatch will eventually go to local farms.
